PHILADELPHIA, PA – When it comes to innovative design no one comes close to the avant-garde and sometimes surprising combinations that Mother Nature seems to create every season. This recognition of nature as the quintessential designer was the inspiration for “SURFACE,” a collaborative cultural exchange by visual artists supporting the VIADUCTgreene project. VIADUCTgreene is a non-profit organization advocating for the creation of a three-mile linear greenspace using a section of the former Philadelphia and Reading Railroad.
SURFACE, an exhibition of wallpaper, panel and tile by Julia Blaukopf, is presented as part of the 2012 DesignPhiladelphia Festival, in partnership with The University of the Arts. The 8th annual city-wide celebration of all things design will run for five-days from October 10 to 14 in unique venues and spaces throughout the city. SURFACE will open Thursday, October 11 at 5:30 p.m. at the offices of Cityspace, 2200 Walnut Street. The exhibition is free and open to the public from noon to 5 p.m. through Sunday, October 14. SURFACE is presented by Michael Garden of Cityspace and The Callahan Ward Companies with the idea management and collaboration of Octo Design Group and Brands Imaging.
“As a professional graphic designer, I know that visual media is the great equalizer. It links gender, religion, and economic status,” says Wendy Verna, president of Octo Design Group. “For that reason choosing VIADUCTgreene as the subject of our 2012 DesignPhiladelphia exhibit made a lot of sense. Philadelphia is the proverbial melting pot and this green space project will run through and link several neighborhoods in the city and will re-purpose a historical railroad line,” she adds.
Now in its 21st year, Octo Design Group, 803 S. 4th St., Philadelphia, is a strategic graphic design firm specializing in marketing and advertising, online and in print. Octo helps clients develop a distinct and recognizable identity to serve as the platform for their brand. The firm is driven by the belief that each piece of marketing collateral, both traditional print and digital media, should have a look and feel that is unique to the brand, but recognizable from one medium to another. Wendy Verna, president of Octo Design Group, is a graduate of Moore College of Art, and a member of the National Association of Professional Women and Professional Women’s Roundtable (PWR).
Julia Blaukopf is a Philadelphia photographer, artist and designer. She creates social art and focuses on visual storytelling through photographs, mixed media works, jewelry and large-scale fabric installations. Her photographs have been exhibited internationally, in Munich and Copenhagen, as well as nationally, in New York, Philadelphia, Baltimore, and Portland, Oregon.
For more information on the exhibition, contact Octo Design Group at (215) 925-8280 or visit www.facebook.com/SURFACEPhila.
